Checking Out Books from the Library

Note: This applies to students who can come to campus to check out physical books.

  1. In-person: You will need to fill out a registration form to check out books.
  2. Off-Campus: If there is something you want to check out, you can save some time by registering in advance. Go to our Catalog page and click the Register Online button.
    • Note: This is unrelated to off-campus access to the library's databases.
    • When you arrive, tell the front desk attendant that you registered online and give them your H-number.
    • The attendant will change your status from temporary (no check out) to Student to complete the process.
    • As a student, you are free to check out as many books as you like.

Book Policies

  • If a book is checked out in your name, then you are responsible for returning it in a timely fashion.
    • Books not returned will not prevent graduation, but it will prevent you from getting transcripts until it is dealt with.
    • Lost books will need to be replaced. You may pay for its replacement or you may bring in your own replacement so long as it is in excellent condition (no underlining, highlighting, not overly worn and used, etc.). The librarians have the right of refusal.
    • Each book will have an additional $10 processing.
  • If a book you need is checked out, we can place a hold on it.
  • Checkout periods will vary by student status (undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral).

Checking Out Books Between Semesters

We are often asked if students can check out books between sessions. Yes, you can; however, you do need to bring in proof of registration for the next semester (for instance, the next semester's class schedule available in Blackboard). We just need to verify that you really will be coming back for the next semester. Summer might be a problem, but the same rule holds. If you can verify that you are registered for the next Fall semester, then you should be able to check out items during the summer.
