Here are some of the problems that we have seen. Give each of these a try a let us know if you are still experiencing problems. These are not in any order of significance.

  1. Are you seeing a "Do Not Trust This Server" type of message? We have alerted HCU ITS about this issue. We can vouch that our server is safe. Following the on-screen browser instructions to allow http://libproxy.hbu.edu as an exception. You should only have to do this once on any computer you use.

  2. Are you at work? Sometimes company firewalls block proxy servers like our EZProxy. To allow it, you will need to speak with your company ITS department and make sure they allow port 2048.

  3. Check to be sure cookies are allowed. EZProxy does require the use of Internet cookies.

  4. A full cache can interfere with EZProxy access. Try emptying it (via your browser's settings).

  5. Ensure that Javascript is enabled.

  6. Are you are following a link from Blackboard, Google Scholar, your syllabus, or a web search? Are you  typing in the direct URL to the database (e.g., JSTOR.com). In order for EZproxy to work, you need to be starting at a library page.  If you have a direct link to an article or database from a course page or syllabus that is not working, you or your professor need to include the following prefix to your URL:

                         http://libproxy.hbu.edu/login?url=

Add the complete URL after the equal (including the http;//). This will allow access through HCU's EZProxy server.

The other possible problem is that there is a limit to the number of simultaneous users on the database to which you are connecting. If you are able to access other library databases, if you get a “too many simultaneous users” error message, or if you have successfully accessed the database before, too many users is the most likely problem. Wait a few minutes and try to connect again.

  7. AOL has its own browser. Open it's browser but then open a new browser window and try again.

  8. Check to be sure your browser and operating system software is up-to-date.

  9. Spyware protection may misidentifies EZproxy as malware.

  10. Using high-speed dial-up or a web accelerator can sometimes interfere. Try turning off them off while using EZProxy.

  11. After logging in, do you see a message that says something about the EZProxy administrator? Something like this:

To allow /login?url=http://www.jstor.org/timely to work, your EZProxy Administrator must first authorize this within the ezproxy.cfg file.
Within this database's section of the file, the following line must be added:

    Host www.jstor.org

The EZProxy server must then be restarted to make this change take effect.

This means the library's configuration file which provides off-campus access is missing a line.
If you receive an error screen which looks something like the message below, please send the error message to the Systems Librarian and tell us know what database or journal you were trying to access.

When all else fails, call the HCU Information Technology Services Department at 281-649-3410.
